INSTALLATION
Before proceeding with installation, please read the Software License Agreement at the end of this User's Manual. By using this software, you accept the terms of the License Agreement.

DOS, WINDOWS 3.1, WINDOWS 95
You must install Metrolink from a DOS Prompt.

INSTALL METROLINK
UPGRADING. Before copying the files from the enclosed CD, make a note of existing PCPLUS COM Port and IRQ settings. Press Alt-P and note the Current Settings - COM Port Setting. Press Alt-S, Modem Options, Port Assignments,
and make a note of the Input/Output Range and IRQ the COM Port pcplus is using.

NEW INSTALL. From Windows Device Manager, make a note of the COM Port, IRQ, and Input/Output range your modem is using. (To get to Device Manager and settings, Right Click on My Computer, Properties and then double click on your modem). The settings in PCPLUS (see upgrading) must match the Device Managers COM Port and IRQ settings.

To Install Metrolink, copy the contents of the PCPLUS folder on the CD to the PCPLUS folder on your hard drive. You must do this from a MSDOS Prompt (to get to a MSDOS prompt, in Windows 95/98 go to Start, Program Files, MSDOS Prompt.) In Windows ME you may need to go to Start, Run, and type: command.com

Once at a DOS Prompt, Get to the root directory by entering:
CD\

Make the following directories on you hard drive by entering the following from the DOS Prompt:
C:>MD C:\PCPLUS
C:>MD C:\PCPLUS\LOGFILES

Copy the contents of the CD to the PCPLUS directory;
C:>COPY D:\PCPLUS\*.* C:\PCPLUS
C:>COPY C:\PCPLUS\*.PCX C:\PCPLUS\LOGFILES
C:>COPY C:\PCPLUS\*.LOG C:\PCPLUS\LOGFILES
note spaces as shown

The above command lines assume your CD is drive D: and that you've made the directories on your C:> Hard Drive.

Add an icon in Windows by right-clicking on the desktop, NEW > SHORTCUT. For Command Line navigate to and select C:\PCPLUS\PCPLUS.EXE. Press OK. Right Click on the newly created icon on your desktop, select Properties, set all Memory settings to AUTO and disable the Screen Saver in Misc. Set Program Name to Metrolink. Add /F to the Command Line to read C:\PCPLUS\PCPLUS.EXE /F

You may Change Icon to anything you like. Type moricons.dll for more icons.

UPGRADE NOTES
The Y2K release of PCPLUS (Ver. 2.03) uses more Conventional Memory than its predecessors. As a result, sometimes there is not enough memory to execute the Metrolink Graphics engine (no photos). You'll know you're too low on Memory if after pressing F10 (to display photos), you get a Windows program error, or your screen flashes quickly, "Program to big to fit in memory".

The fix is to download Metrolink Ver 5.3 from this BBS, then after Hang-up, press Alt-S, Display/Sound Options, and change the size of item H.- Redisplay Buffer to a lesser number such as 20K or 40K. Although the size of the Redisplay/Scrollback buffer (accessed on-line by pressing F6) is smaller but this will buy you the memory needed to view and print photos. Because you're capturing text to LOGs anyway, you normally don't need a large Redisplay Buffer.

How do you know if you have enough memory? If you can view photos your fine. If you're having the problems above, press D- DOS GATEWAY and type MEM. You should have at least 260K of free memory in the line that says "Largest Executable Program size:". You can adjust the size of the Redisplay Buffer as long as you don't go below 260K.

COM PORT and MODEM SPEED Settings
Before attempting to call MLS, make sure your COM Port is set correctly. Think of a COM Port as the "link" between your modem and computer. If you have a mouse, it is using one of your COM ports. Your modem must use a different COM port than your mouse.

Check the LINE PORT Setting and MODEM SPEED in PCPLUS by pressing Alt-P. If you are using a 28.8 baud modem, and if you have a mouse connected to COM 1, after pressing Alt-P configure the modem settings to appear as follows.

CURRENT SETTINGS: 38400,N,8,1,COM2

Where 38400=Baud Rate, N=No Parity, 8=Data Bits, 1=Stop Bits, and COM2=COM Port 2. Use 38400 for 28.8 Modems and Faster. Use 19200 for 14.4. 9600 for 9600, 2400 for 2400. Alt-S saves your changes. Consult your PCPLUS manual or this link for more information.

MEMORY
Metrolink uses EMS-Expanded Memory. Make sure DOS or Windows 95 is configured to use EMS memory. Type MEM from a DOS prompt to see if you have any Expanded Memory. If you do not see any Expanded Memory, and if you are running MS-DOS 6.xx, your may run "MEMMAKER" from a DOS prompt to configure EMS-Expanded memory.
Or…
Running Windows 95,98 DOS or Windows 3.1, you may edit your config.sys file to allocate Expanded Memory. Type the following from C:\> (root directory).

EDIT CONFIG.SYS <Enter>.

Edit the following line if NOEMS is present in the EMM386.EXE device driver line. Change DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS to

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM

Alt-F, Save, Exit, and then Reboot your computer. Once you have configured EMS memory in DOS or Windows '95, select EMS-Expanded Memory in Metrolink's SETUP MENU.

Windows ME does not read a config.sys file on boot-up. Expanded Memory is configured in the system.ini file. Before editing the system.ini file, make a backup of it called system.org (not .bak as it is overwritten automatically by ME on boot up). Click Start, Run, system.ini. Find the section of system.ini that begins with heading [386enh].

Find the line in that section that begins with NoEMS. If that that line exists, put a semicolon ; in front of it to edit it out.

Reboot and if Expanded Memory is still not available, add the following line directly beneath the heading.

EMMInclude=D400-E3FF

Alternate memory addresses are:
EMMInclude=D800-E7FF
EMMInclude=DC00-EBFF
EMMInclude=D400-E3FF
EMMInclude=E000-EFFF
EMMInclude=D000-DFFF

Note Zero's are not Ohs. Reboot and if Expanded Memory is still not available, add the following line.

ReservePageFrame=yes

Reboot and if Expanded Memory is still not available, specify the page frame by adding ONE of the following lines.

EmmPageFrame=D000
EmmPageFrame=E000
EmmPageFrame=C400
EmmPageFrame=C800

Reboot and if Expanded Memory is still not available, put a semicolon ; before EmmPageFrame= (above) and the line that begins EMMExclude=, and change the EMMInclude line to use C800-D7FF. If that fails try C400-D3FF.

If absolutely none o the alternateives produces EMS memory on your stytem, you should probably restore your oringal SYSTEM.INI, or delete the lines you added, and consider installing Windows '98, instead of Windows ME.

SETUP MENU
Before attempting to call MLS, your must configure items in Metrolink's SET-UP MENU which you'll find on the Metrolink MAIN MENU.

Metrolink has a screen saver. Enter the number of seconds of inactivity to wait before the screen saver activates.

Enter your Office ID, MLS Password, any phone # prefixes like "*70," to disable call waiting, and the MLS and BBS Phone#s. MLS and BBS Phone #s all have 303 Area Codes which are not necessary if calling from within the Denver area.
Metrolist 14.4 or 28.8+ Modems: 779-8769
Metrolist 2400 or 9600 Modems: 850-7716
Metrolink BBS all Modems: 699-8545
Make up a Password you won't forget for the Metrolink BBS (Bulletin Board Support).
Select the Photo Printer you'll be using to print property sheets. ALL Laser Printers will use LaserJet 300x300 or LaserJet 600x600 if it supports the higher resolution. ALL Epson InkJet printers use the DOT-MATRIX 24 Pin driver selection.
Select LPT1 or LPT2 for your printer output depending on how your computer is configured (almost always LPT1).
Enter your First and Last Name Only if you will be using Metrolink's Free Internet Mail Service found on the BBS.
Enter your Company Name and Phone Number.
Press the F10 key to accept the settings.

This procedure only needs to be performed once, unless you change passwords, change companies, printers, phone system dialing sequences, etc..

Enter a 9, or other numbers if your phone system requires it to obtain an outside line. Type the access number(s) followed by a comma or two, and then the MLS and BBS phone number (i.e.: 9,850-7716). Each Comma represents a 2-3 second pause in the dialing sequence.

Windows Icon SETUP
After installing PROCOMM and Metrolink from a DOS prompt, EXIT back to Windows. Right-click on a blank area of the desktop. Select NEW, SHORTCUT, BROWSE, find the PCPLUS directory, and select the file called pcplus.exe. Rename the shortcut to METROLINK, Finish.

Right-click on the MS-DOS icon called METROLINK, select Properties, then Program, you may Change Icon and select C:\WINDOWS\MORICONS.DLL, Find the PCPLUS Plus icon (blue square with wavey lines although it does not matter which icon you choose).

Click on the Memory tab and set all memory options to AUTO, including EMS-Expanded memory required by Metrolink. If Expanded Memory is unavailable, see MEMORY in the Installation section of this User's Guide.

Windows 3.1 SETUP (DOS and Windows 3.1 Only)
From Program Manager, with any Applications or other Program Group open, choose File, New, Program item. Type in the following information as shown below:

Once this information is typed in, you may optionally select Change Icon... You will now be presented with a box where you will be prompted for a file name. Type c:\windows\MORICONS.dll and press <Enter>. Click on the PROCOMM icon (blue square with wavy lines), or any other icon you like. Press OK to select the Icon. Press OK again in the Program Item Properties box. The selected Metrolink icon should now be present in the Group. To start Metrolink for MLS from Program Manager, double click the left mouse button while pointing at the Metrolink icon.

MOUSE SUPPORT and SMARTDRV.EXE
If you are going to be using the mouse with Metrolink for MLS in DOS or Windows 3.1, make sure your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is loading a mouse driver (i.e. C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE). Also make sure your autoexec.bat file is loading C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE. It is very important to Metrolink's performance. Windows '95 takes care of loading these drivers for you. The mouse works with the Metrolink software in both Graphics (Book View) and regular menu mode . The Left mouse click is enter/select, and a Right mouse click is Escape. You may also use highlighted key codes instead of the mouse.

ABOUT MODEMS
If you are not using a 14,400 or higher modem, you should purchase a new modem. A 9,600 baud modem is acceptable if you already have one. Metrolink and PROCOMM PLUS support 14.4k to 57k baud rates.   Windows only modems and the new moterboards with built in modems are normally not configurable.   You may need to purchase another modem which are configurable for DOS based apps like Metrolink.  If this is the case, modems using the Rockwell chipset are recommended and Metrolink sells an excellent one for $45.

From the Metrolink MAIN MENU, set you modem's Initialization String as follows:
Alt-S, Modem Options, Modem Commands, A - Initialization String,
Internal and External Modems use AT&F^M or AT&F&C1&D2^M
Laptops use ATZ^M

After saving your changes, at the Metrolink MAIN MENU press Alt-J to Initialize the modem with the new string.

VGA and AGP video cards from Diamond Multimedia lock Windows after exiting Metrolink for some unkown reason.

PORT SETTINGS. Alt-P
You should set your modem speed to 19200 for a 14.4 modem and 38400 for a 28.8 or 33.6 modem. Press Alt-P from the Metrolink MAIN MENU to configure the Port in PROCOMM PLUS.

Set PROCOMM PLUS's COM Port and IRQ settings to MATCH the Resources shown in Windows '95 Device Manager. From the Metrolink MAIN MENU, Alt-P allows you to configure PROCOMM's COM Port and Connect Speed (i.e.: CURRENT SETTING 38400,N,8,1,COM2).

Configure the IRQ assignment to match your modem as shown in Windows '95 Device Manager from the Metrolink MAIN MENU by pressing Alt-S, Modem Options, Port Assignments. Standard modem COM Port and IRQ settings are as follows, but may differ depending on your computer's configuration.

I/O Range / Interrupt
COM1 03F8 / IRQ4
COM2 02F8 / IRQ3
COM3 03E8 / IRQ4  or IRQ5
COM4 02E8 / IRQ3

PROCOMM PLUS supports up to COM8 / IRQ7.
IRQ 5 and 7 are used on some laptops often.

DETERMINE THE MODEM'S COM PORT IN WINDOWS '95
Metrolink for MLS runs great with Windows '95. There are a few things you need to know. To check Windows '95 Port Settings, right click on My Computer, select Properties, Device Manager, double click on Modem, double-click on the modem shown, click the Modem Tab and make a note of the COM Port and Input/Output range (IRQ) the modem is using. Set PCPLUS to the same COM Port and IRQ.

With some of the news machines with "Windows" Modems, you DO NOT configure the Port in Device Manager, Ports, to the port the Modem is using. Older machines or newer ones with add-in modems, you DO need the Port in Device Manager configured to match the port the modem is using.

With older machines or ones with added modems, you need to "DISABLE" the COM Port your modem is assigned to in the computers system BIOS. Because the modem needs the COM Port, you need to prohibit the computer from using it. To access your system's BIOS settings, you press the DEL key, F1 Key, F10 key or sometimes the Escape key, or other combination while the system is booting.

ABOUT PRINTERS
Metrolink works with all known LaserJet, Dot Matrix and most InkJet Printers with the exception of a few "Windows" printers. If purchasing an InkJet Printer, do not purchase printers specifically designed "For Windows" as they do not have internal memory and have trouble with DOS applications. If you're not sure, ask the dealer if the printer supports printing from DOS applications. Here is a list of know Printer which do and don't work with Metrolink.   We try to keep this list up-to-date, especially if we find printers that won't work with Metrolink.

USING METROLINK USING METROLINK USING METROLINK - Five Step User's Manual (also see: Metrolink Tutorial) USING METROLINK - Five Step User's Manual (also see: Metrolink Tutorial)
This User's Guide assumes you have familiarity with Metrolist's character-based MLS system, and that you have taken Metrolist's MLS 101 course. If you are rookie or a veteran user however, you will find that Metrolink pops-up all MLS Functions, Search Criteria, and Dictionaries throughout your MLS search, including PDC searches and New Home Database searches. This is why Metrolink has become the perfect complement to the Metrolist system.

Five Step User's Manual
Following these five steps and you will understand the simplicity of Metrolink.
1). From the MAIN MENU, press <Enter> on CALL MLS-LOG ON.
2). Wait for FUNCTION ? Press ALT-F1 to create a LOG file to save your search. Name your LOG (eight characters or less). Press Enter.
LOG files are text files you create ON-LINE which consist of MLS text
NOTE: There is no limit to the number of LOGs Metrolink allows you to create. Note that the path to the LOG files is C:\PCPLUS\LOGFILES\. When you install Metrolink the LOGFILES subdirectory of PCPLUS is created. It is a good idea to store all of your LOGs in this subdirectory as the C:\PCPLUS\ directory is where the PCPLUS and Metrolink programs reside. The BPD (Book Picture Download) photos you download are PCX format and are also stored in the LOGFILES subdirectory.
3). Perform your search. Press F1 anywhere on-line for pop-up dictionaries and menus throughout your MLS, PDC, or New Home search.
FUNCTION ? F1 Pops up all of the MLS or PDC Functions.
Note: the black letters and numbers are hot-keys. Press L for Search Listing, press E. for E-mail Options, 6 for Print Options, etc.
Enter Feature or <END> ? F1 Pops-up the Feature List Dictionary
The F5 key allows you to TAG multiple search criteria. After you press Enter, Metrolink will ask you to respond to each MLS Feature item you tagged. Of course you may also type in the Features from the terminal just like you always have.
Complete your search and always capture (F)ull listing text to your LOG.
4). Press F11 to download all missing photos in your LOG (up to ten at a time).* Wait for COMPLETED and a return to FUNCTION ?
*You may wish to download selective photos. At FUNCTION?, type BPD, Enter, press F2 (the LOG Open Key). Tag individual listing numbers with the F5 key. Press Enter. After all of the photos are finished "Creating" and you're asked again for Listing#s, Enter. Metrolink will download the selected photos. Wait for COMPLETED and return to FUNCTION ?

Keep in mind that when you are in Terminal Mode, Metrolink for MLS isn't running and it is not processing your keystrokes or keeping track of your session for F1 pop-up help. Escape to Function after pressing Alt-1.

note: With an F1 pop-up Dictionary displayed, after you have tagged selections with the F5 key, you may edit your tagged selections. Add or edit street names, subdivision names, condo names, schedule #s, etc., in the search string, by pressing the F7 key.

BBS (Bulletin Board Support)
System changes and enhancements are made occasionally at Metrolist. Metrolink program file updates are posted to the Metrolink BBS and this website. Access to the BBS is built into Metrolink and is found on the Main Menu. If you don't see the File Area on the BBS, we need to activate your account so let us know you need File Area access on the BBS by e-mailing us a message here.

BBS Free Internet Mail
Metrolink currently provides its customers with Free Internet Mail. Instructions for Sending and Receiving mail over the Internet are found on the BBS. File attachments are supported.

THE LOG AND PHOTO VIEWER
The LOG AND PHOTO VIEWER is accessed from the MAIN MENU off-line or by pressing Alt-F1 on-line when you are creating your LOGs.

Off-Line, either type in the name of the LOG you wish to work with, or highlight it using the mouse or arrow keys. The date, time and size of your LOGs are shown on the menu. After selecting the name of the LOG you wish to work with, press <Enter>. Several options are presented.

VIEW - OPEN THE LOG
By pressing <Enter> at View - Open the LOG, your LOG is opened for viewing. Let's take a look at our options.
F10 View All Photos. By Pressing F10 you are presented with Book View. Click on a photo in Book View to see it in Full View which shows individual listings with all of the listing information.
Note: you may have multiple pages in Book View (if you have more than nine listing in your LOG). Click the Next or Back buttons to view the other pages or listings. Click Print or All-Print in Full View to print individual property information sheets.
F8 View No-Photos. With New Listings or Solds over 1 year old, photos are not available. F8 allows you to view and print these property information sheets in Book View or Full View just like F10, only without photos.
Del When highlighting a Listing # that has a photo, you have the capability of deleting the photo by pressing the Delete Key. You may wish to do this if there has been a photo re-take of the listing.
F5 Tags Listing #s. Perhaps you are only interested in viewing and printing selective listings. By tagging the Listing #s with the F5 key you cue up those listings for viewing. After you have tagging the listing #s, press Enter and you will see just those listings you have tagged.
F4 Clear Entries. This option allows you clear the listing #s you have tagged.
F3 Reformat Log. Occassionally, the text is not alligned property. F3 will reformat the LOG.
F2 Edit LOG. You may Edit your LOG files by pressing the F2 key. You may wish to Delete, Move, or Insert Text in your LOGs before printing. Metrolink uses the PCEDIT text editor which comes with PCPLUS. See Edit the Log later in this User's Guide for more information on how to use PCEDIT.

EDIT THE LOG
You may edit your session (add or delete text), by choosing the Edit the Log option from the LOG AND PHOTO VIEWER. F2 will start the PCPLUS text editor. After starting the text editor, Alt-Z will show you the key command options for editing your text. Some of the most commonly used key commands while using the PROCOMM text editor are:, Alt-D Delete Line, Alt-R Replace Deleted Line, Alt-B Mark Block,
Alt-U Unmark Block
, Alt-E Erase Block, Ctl-J Join line to next line at current line cursor position, Alt-Q Don't save changes and exit text editor

PRINT THE LOG
By selecting Print the Log from the LOG AND PHOTO VIEWER, you will be able to print the log-text file off line, as if you had printed text on-line. Keep in mind pictures will not print when selecting this option. With faster modems printers have trouble keeping up with text as it is being displayed on-line, which is why you will capture the text to a LOG and print it off-line using this option. After pressing Enter on this option, you will be asked where the output should be sent, LPT1 or LPT2. Most always you will select LPT1 (Line Port 1).

REDISPLAY THE BUFFER
By selecting Redisplay the Buffer, you are able to scroll back and look at your session. Keep in mind that the PCPLUS Redisplay Buffer is finite and is set to its maximum of 63K by Metrolink. You may also print text directly from redisplay buffer.

SAVE BUFFER TO LOG
By selecting Save Buffer to Log, you are able to save the Redisplay Buffer to a Log file. This is handy in case you forgot to create a LOG file on-line (Alt-F1).

TIPS and TECHNIQUES
Printing On-Line
While On-Line, you may turn the printer on-off any time while on-line by pressing the Alt-L keys. Once you BYE, Metrolink will send a form-feed to the printer to eject the last page.
note: It is recommended that you not print you sessions while on line, especially MLS Listings. Printer and modem communications can bottleneck which will not only slow down your session, but may throw off the print format. Capture your searches to a LOG on-line (Alt-F1) and print your sessions off-line from the LOG & PHOTO VIEWER..

Tagging
Many F1 help pop-ups allow you to use the F5 key to tag/select multiple search criteria. Use the arrow keys or mouse to move to the search criteria you wish to use. With the option highlighted, press the F5 key. That option will now appear in the entry field at the bottom of the help menu. F5 again will remove it from the entry field.

Multiple search options may be tagged. They are separated by a comma from other selections, and are displayed in the entry field. Metrolink knows how to transmit multiple search options to MLS, either one option at a time, or in a string. If the entry field fills up, press <Enter> and wait for your selected options to be transmitted to MLS. You may select more options by pressing the F1 key again, once all of the previous selections have been transmitted.

Sorting With Custom Prints
Many time you'll end up with many listing that meet your search criteria and you'd like to narrow it down by evaluating those listings. Capture to a log these listing with an MLS Custom Print. Capture the Abbreviated line of text first, then the Custom Features (F1 pops-up the custom features list). Then Escape to FUNCTION?, and type PL (Print Listing). When prompted for the listing #s, press the F2 key. The Abbreviated and Custom print with the listing #s will be displayed in your LOG. Tag (F5) only the listing numbers you wish to print full. F11 then will retrieve photos for just those listings with full text in your log.

The same holds true for the PDC side of MLS. Open a log file (Alt F1) and then Search Name or Search Address, or Search Zip. Capture text in Abbreviated format. Escape, F1, choose Search Pin/Parcel. Press F2 to open your LOG which allows you to tag the PIN numbers of the property you're interested in. You may wish to edit a PIN # because they represent township/range, code, section, quarter, lot and block, in that order. The more specific the schedule number is, the more specific the property search will be.

UPDATING DICTIONARIES
MLS changes their Dictionaries from time to time both in MLS, PDC, New Home and other databases. Metrolink updates these dictionaries to match Metrolist's changes, and posts them to the BBS and on this website in a zipped file called SCREENS.ZIP. After downloading screens.zip from this website, use Metrolink to call into the BBS, sign-in, and then hang-up. Metrolink will unzip the dictionary files automatically and copy a few PCX files and sample.log to the c:\pcplus\logfiles subdirectory.

Alternatively, you can unzip screens.zip manually, type the following from the command prompt C:\PCPLUS Directory: PKUNZIP -o SCREENS :Subdivision Names, Condo Names, and Schools Codes, and any other dictionary may also be edited by you with the PCPLUS text editor. Be careful to maintain column alignment if editing dictionary files. You will also need to copy the unziped *.PCX files to the logfiles subdirectory of PCPLUS.

Editing Dicionaries
Metrolink for MLS is designed to allow you to edit Library Files. A Library File contains street names, MLS search options, subdivision names, etc. T load a Library File for editing, from the Off-Line MAIN MENU select U. Metrolink Utilities. You will then be asked to enter the name of the file you wish to edit. Listed below, are names for Metrolink for MLS Library files which you may want to edit. These files are located in your C:\PCPLUS directory.

PROCOMM SETUP
You may display all of the PCPLUS commands and options, both on and off line, by pressing Alt-Z. You may also display those same PROCOMM commands in a menu format by pressing the ~ key. It is very important to make sure that in Procomm Setup (Alt-S, Modem Options, Result Messages) that the connect messages read CONNECT only and not CONNECT 9600, CONNECT 19200, CONNECT 38400, etc.. If they do have the baud rates (ie: CONNECT 19200), delete the connect baud rates so it reads CONNECT only. Also it is very important that Autobaud Detect is set to OFF (Modem Options, General Options). In Terminal Options make sure Hardware and Software Flow Control is turned ON.

TROUBLESHOOTING
In multi-tasking environments such as Windows, initializing the modem may be necessary if you run another program which uses the same COM Port as PCPLUS. Laptop users may need to initialize the modem. Alt-J initialized the modem when using PCPLUS and Metrolink..

Symptom. Your hear Metrolink-PCPLUS calling MLS, but you never get "CONNECT".
Your modem may not support the higher baud rate set in PCPLUS. Alt-P and select a lower baud rate.

  1. Your Modem is set to the wrong IRQ. Determine which IRQ your modem is using and set PCPLUS to that IRQ. Methods for determining which IRQ your modem is using are as follows: Windows '95: Right click on My Computer. Left click Properties, Device Manager, Modem. Double click on Modem, double-click on your Modem, select Resources, and make a note of your Input-Output Range. PCPLUS will use any from IRQ from 1 through 7. Windows 3.1 or DOS: From DOS, type MSD <Enter>, Check your COM Ports and IRQ Settings using this utility.
  2. Laptops are many times set at an IRQ over 7 (the maximum PCPLUS allows). Lower your modem's assigned IRQ (Input-Output Range) in Windows '95 by un-checking "Use Automatic Settings" in Modem Resources and select a different configuration. One that usually works well IRQ 5, COM 3. Don't forget to change to settings in PCPLUS. Alt-P to change COM Port. Alt-S, Modem Options, Port Assignments allows you to change the IRQ used by any COM Port.

Symptom: After starting PCPLUS, the Metrolink MAIN MENU does not appear.
PCPLUS is not set to the proper COM Port and/or IRQ Setting. You will see an error message telling you your modem is not configured properly. Alt-P allows you set the COM Port in PCPLUS. The IRQ is set by pressing Alt-S, Modem Options, Port Assignments.  In Windows '95 - '98 your modem settings in Procomm MUST match those in Windows Device Manager (IRQ, Input/Output range I/O, and COM port). Click here for a list of common Port and IRQ and I/O settings but remember, they must match what Windows Device Manager has your modem set to.   Sometimes you will need to adjust the modem settings in Windows because Procomm will only support IRQs up to 7.

Symptom: I create/open a LOG (Alt-F1 on-line) but nothing gets captured to the LOG file.
Run SCANDISK from DOS in DOS or Windows 3.1, or from Start, Run in Windows '95.

Symptom: You have a fast Pentium PC (PII 300+) and your screen locks after exiting from Metrolink.  Turn your Graphics Card Acceleration off (usually by right clicking on the desktop, click settings, click advanced and turn hardware acceleration all the way down).   This has been found to generally occur with Diamond and Sis Graphics cards.

Symptom:  You have a fast Pentium PC (usually PII 200+) and when installing Procomm you get a Integer divide by 0 error.  You will need to install Procomm on a slower machine, copy the Procomm files to a floppy disk, copy the disk to the C:\PCPLUS directory on your fast computer and run the D2UP0001.EXE patch found on this website.   After download the patch file, at the C:\PCPLUS prompt, type D2UP0001 to extract the patch.  Then type DT_PATCH P200 (Enter), DT_PATCH PCKEY (Enter), DT_PATCH PCSETUP (Enter), DT_PATCH PCEDIT (Enter).  This will fix the I/O error.

Symptom: You modem hangs or locks while on-line with MLS.
Set your modem Initialization Command to AT&F^M     If you get garbage characters after hanging up, set it to ATZ^M   If Procomm reports that you are on-line when in fact you know your modem is not, your Initialization Command should read AT&F&C1&D2^M   To get to get to the Initialization Command press Alt-S, Modem Options, Modem Commands, A.

Symptom: Windows '95, '98 only. You're viewing properties in Book View or Full View and when you click on Print, the Progress monitor counts up to 100% but nothing is sent to your Printer.
Check your printer cables. If this isn't the problem you may need to Capture the Printer Port. Double Click My Computer, Double Click Printers, Right Click on your printer, select Properties, Details, Capture Printer Port. Spool Settings: Select Spool Print Jobs, Start Printing after first page spooled, EMF. If you have an HP 820cse for Windows printer.  Check compatible printers.

Symptom: Windows 3.1 or DOS only. Your Mouse doesn't work. Load your mouse driver (mouse.exe or mouse.com) in the autoexec.bat file.

Symptom: Windows 3.1 or DOS only. Your computer seems to perform sluggishly using Metrolink (you can hear the hard drive caching when moving through Metrolink Menus.)  Load smartdrv.exe in your autoexec.bat file.

Symptom: You hear the modem connecting but never get CONNECT. See Procomm Setup
Symptom: You have Procomm set to a high baud rate (ie: 19200 or 38400 Alt-P), but you connect at a slow speed. See Procomm Setup.

Other Notes:Windows '95 only: With some of the news machines with "Windows" plug and play modems, you DO NOT configure the Port in Device Manager, Ports, to the port the Modem is using. This is also true with most Laptops. Older machines or newer ones with after-market add-on modems that have jumpers, you DO need the Port and IRQ in Device Manager configured to match the port and IRQ the modem is using.

DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows '95: In most cases, and especially with older machines or ones with added modems, you need to "DISABLE" the COM Port your modem is assigned to in the computer's system BIOS. To access your system's BIOS settings, you press the DEL key, F1 Key, F10 key or sometimes the Escape key, or other combination while the system is booting. Because the modem needs the COM Port, you need to prohibit the computer from using it.

Occassionally while On-Line, the Metrolink program can be unintentionally exited. If the F1 key does not work, press Alt-1 to restart Metrolink. After entering BYE, the MAIN MENU should re-appear. If it does not, press Alt-1 to restart Metrolink.

If you have trouble disconnecting, or if line noise should corrupt your session with strange characters, you may press Ctrl-T to shell to Terminal Mode. Alt-1 will restart Metrolink. Alt-H hangs up and will return you to the Main Menu.
